Christmas In Kilkenny

Christmas In Kilkenny

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… finally! We love Christmas in The Hoban Hotel and the rest of Kilkenny seems to agree. The city lights up with thousands of twinkling lights, excited shoppers and the sound of Christmas carols fills the air. There are so many festive events throughout the holiday season in Kilkenny, you’ll have to plan your visit well to fit them all in! Here are our pick of the Yulefest events this Christmas in Kilkenny

Launch of Yulefest:

Yulefest is the name given to an inclusive group of events happening in the city across the festive season. Events include shopping, dining, family-friendly days out and cultural events; there is something for everyone. The launch of Yulefest marks the start of this wonderful 6-week festival running from 22nd November 2019 to 6th January 2020. On 23rd November join neighbours, friends and visitors for the official switching on of the Christmas lights followed by music, a festive atmosphere and very special guests for the little ones.

Kilkenny on Ice:

Kilkenny on Ice is back for 2019 and is bigger and better than ever. The Hub at Cillin Hill turns into our very own Winter Wonderland, complete with 600 square meters of real ice. It’s the perfect place to try skating for the first time, improve your skills or perfect your pirouette. You’ll also see the return of the very popular Bungee Trampolines and their new attraction, the Mammoth Ice Globes. If you don’t fancy taking to the ice, you can always relax in the Ice Café, enjoying a nice hot drink or snack while you wait.

Nore Valley Park Christmas Experience:

This year Nore Valley Park have a bespoke Christmas area in MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre where you and your family can enjoy a range of Christmas activities and events. Santa arrives on 24th November in a flurry of dance and musical performances, free face painting and a live DJ. From then you can visit either by appointment or drop in to see the big man and his friendly helpers. Entry includes a visit to the live Nativity Display and a meet and greet with Santa where you can pose for pictures and give your little ones a gift to take home.

Christmas Tree Festival:

From 5-10th December, the interior of St. Canice’s Cathedral is turned into an indoor forest of Christmas trees. Over 120 trees will fill the cathedral, each individually decorated as a work of imagination and art. Many local schools, businesses and clubs have participated, making this an annual tradition not to be missed. Tea, coffee and juice will be served and there will be a stall selling delicious seasonal treats while you take your time and enjoy the festive atmosphere. You’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy a tour of the Belfry which isn’t part of the usual visitor experience.

Mayors annual Xmas concert:

In what has become an annual Kilkenny tradition, The Mayor of Kilkenny hosts a Christmas Concert in The Watergate Theatre. A show for all ages, this concert will definitely get you into the Christmas Spirit! Come and enjoy the best of local talent including Guest Performers like Patrick Rafter, The Kilkenny Gospel Choir and Alize’s School of Music. It’s a great night of music and dancing and all proceeds from tickets for this exciting event go to Cois Nore, Cancer Support Centre.
