Summer in the Heritage City of Kilkenny

Summer in the Heritage City of Kilkenny

With restrictions finally starting to ease and life slowly but surely returning to normal, we are looking forward to a busy summer in Hoban Hotel. Kilkenny is the perfect place for a summer staycation with everything from fascinating history and heritage to beautiful sandy beaches within a short distance of our comfortable hotel. Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to from a  summer break in the heritage city of Kilkenny.

Explore the City

Our location on the edge of the city centre offers you the best of both worlds. You are perfectly placed to walk a short distance into the city and enjoy a day exploring the Medieval Mile, or pack yourself up in the car and drive 20-minutes to the gorgeous Tramore Beach in Waterford. If you’re planning a day of discovery in the city, buy a Medieval Mile pass which gives you access to the historical highlights of Kilkenny; Kilkenny CastleMedieval Mile MuseumRothe HouseSmithwick’s ExperienceSt Canice’s Cathedral. You can also climb the narrow steps of Round Tower for a spectacular bird’s eye view of the city. We have lots of tips in our staycation blog if you need inspiration.

Golfing in Kilkenny

Did you know Kilkenny has some of the most impressive golf courses in Ireland? Follow in the footsteps of Irish pro’s Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington who have played on Kilkenny courses and perfected their championship skills. Mount Juliet is a picturesque course and host to the Irish Open multiple times. As one of Ireland’s premier golf destinations, Mount Juliet is busy all year round but there are excellent local courses to practice on nearby like Kilkenny Golf Club and Gowran Park Golf Club. Golf is a perfect summer activity, facilitating natural social distance while soaking up some rare summer rays.

Explore the Nearby Coast

One of the most popular beaches in Irelands, Tramore Strand, is just 40-minutes from Hoban Hotel, in nearby County Waterford. Tramore has everything you want for a fun day out, a golden sandy beach, some beautiful coastal walks and a plethora of cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs and shops. Pack a picnic (or buy one from our new and improved Hoban Coffee Dock) and enjoy a day relaxing by the Irish Sea, followed by a quick trip to the nearby amusements – bringing back fond memories of a childhood in Ireland. Finish your day watching the sun go down while eating chips from the famous Dooley’s Fish & Chips Tramore.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

We’re still being advised that outdoors is the safest place to be. Luckily, Kilkenny has many outdoor attractions and activities which will make your visit one to remember. If you love exploring in nature and trying an adventure activity sounds like a perfect staycation activity, Castlecomer is a great stop for you. Stop in Dunmore Caves along the way to discover a coastal cave system that was once used by Vikings. Your next stop is  Castlecomer Discovery Park, an outdoor playground filled with scenic walks, woodland, picnic areas, zipline, octagon, fairy villages and so much more. It’s a perfect day out with something for all ages.

Family Fun in Kilkenny

Kilkenny is a family-friendly city, with almost all of our main attractions suitable for children. Castlecomer Discovery Park (above) was built with fun in mind and is a full day of excitement for all ages. You can also visit The National Reptile Zoo to learn more about our scaley friends, dip your feet in the water in The Watershed – a top of the range sports and leisure facility just five minutes from the hotel or get creative in The Happy Pottery, creating memories and masterpieces you’ll treasure forever. Kilkenny Activity Centre is ideal for older, more energetic children with a huge selection of activities ranging from treasure trails to assault courses.

We are delighted to welcome back leisure guests from 2nd June and are expecting a very busy summer. If you’re planning your summer holiday in Kilkenny, make sure to book great value accommodation in Hoban Hotel soon to avoid disappointment.
