Smithwick’s Experience in Kilkenny

Jan 29, 2019

Have you tried Ireland’s most popular ale? If not, you are seriously missing out! We are lucky this famous ale is brewed right in the heart of our beautiful historic city so you don’t have to travel far to sample the worlds freshest pint of Smithwicks. Here’s what to expect when you visit Smithwicks Experience Kilkenny:

History

Smithwicks gets its name from the mysterious Mr. John Smithwick who moved to Kilkenny in the 1700’s when Penal Laws were in full swing – meaning he could not run for office or own a business. Despite the law, Mr. Smithwick entered into a brewing business which he kept top secret along with all of his business affairs. Smithwicks was so named when the Penal Laws were removed in 1827 and the business has been continually growing, cementing the award-winning beer in Kilkenny society. Smithwicks is still brewed to the highest standards today and is exported to be enjoyed worldwide.

What you can do there

If you are a brewing enthusiast or just a fan of a really good Ale, the Smithwick’s experience is the ideal place to learn a little more about how it makes its way from grain to glass. They believe there is no better way to learn than to get your hands dirty and get stuck in, so they offer the unique opportunity to mill the malt, stir the mash and smell the hops. You will learn a little about the history of Kilkenny and a lot about the history of the company and the brewing process and what makes Smithwicks Irelands number one ale. Their guides are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the process and are willing to answer all of your questions. Since it first opened, the brewery has expanded to include three different types of ales, Red, Blond & Pale. While there you can upgrade your ticket to include a tasting of the three ales and get an explanation about what makes them different. You may even leave with a new favourite!
