Kilkenny Day

Forget St Patrick’s Day, Kilkenny in October is where the real party is! Every year in October, the county comes together to celebrate all things Kilkenny from our sporting achievements to our creativity and culture. The programme of events is packed with everything that makes us great with music and dancing, food and drink, theatre and live performances and so much more. There is usually a street party in the city with plenty of free events for all of the family. Participants and attendees are encouraged to wear black and amber, the official colours of Kilkenny GAA to show their support. The lineup is soon to be announced so keep an eye on the official website or social media for more information.

Heritage Week Kilkenny

National Heritage Week is a celebration of all things history, culture and heritage, opening doors and minds of those who want to learn more about Ireland’s Heritage. Communities, families, academics and organisations come together to build awareness of the value of heritage and its contribution to the country. Kilkenny Heritage Week takes place from 13-21st August 2022 but many of the attractions are open all year round. There are hundreds of things to get involved in, from history tours to exploring the great outdoors and the city has a lovely buzz all week long. After a long day of learning and exploring, head to one of our heritage pubs and enjoy a pint of Ireland’s most popular ale, Smithwick’s – which was once brewed right here in town.

Explore Irelands Medieval Mile

No matter where you are in Kilkenny, you are stepping on a part of Ireland’s history. Kilkenny City has a rich medieval heritage visible throughout the streets and buildings. One of the best attractions in the county is the Medieval Mile, a walkway of narrow and cobbled streets, and historical buildings and landmarks Ireland’s Medieval Mile runs from ‘Castle to Cathedral’ through the heart of the city from the 13th Century St Canice’s Cathedral and the Anglo-Normal castle. Discover a Dominican Abbey with some of the most beautiful stained glass, the enchanting Rothe Gardens and St. Canice’s Round Tower which at 30m is one of only three climbable towers in Ireland. Stop for a pint & a story in the traditional home of witches, Kytlers Inn, which has been a part of the town since the 14th century. Learn more about the people that made our city along the way.

It’s the perfect time to explore Kilkenny walking trails dotted around the county. There is something for everyone from the easy Castlecomer Loop to the more challenging Brandon Hill Loop.
